Football comes to Culica, there is a new Culica® game, called CuFootball, for two players.

CuFootball is unusual in that it is the first game designed specifically for two Culica cubes joined together.

CuFootball is based on football (soccer) and is played with two teams, a Red Team and a Blue Team, (red and blue pegs). Each team comprises ten players comprising strikers, midfielders and defenders and a keeper (green peg). A yellow peg is the ball. The ball is kicked around the pitch, and players move around the pitch too.

On a personal note, more than any other games rules, I (James) designed this game, CuFootball, for other people. Nearly all of the other Culica games rules are games that I designed for myself, the kind of games I enjoy playing, and think others will love too. Paradoxically, designing CuFootball rules has long fascinated me. The first CuFootball game I designed was back in March 2011, before the Culica was even manufactured!

There are two big differences between that early prototype CuFootball and this official one. Firstly the new CuFootball has some random chance elements, just like real football does. Secondly, the new CuFootball is played with two Cubes joined together. Culica Biz guru, Chris, suggested that, with a view that kids in the playground will like joining their Culica cubes to play on the combined shape. Chris's suggestion was a great suggestion as the combined surface of two Culicas is perfect for CuFootball. Following from that, I realised that the pitch could be three of the long sides (central part and left and right wings), with the fourth side allowing the Culica pair to be rested on a table. The end-faces are the goals.

Chance elements involve both attack and defence. Each pass and shot has a probability of succeeding. Each tackle and save by the defending side has a chance of succeeding, and possession of the ball may be won by the other team. Skill is also needed in deciding on player formations and how to move the players. Movement of the players also has a chance element. This combination of chance and skill and gives a life-like feel to the game play.

The rules of CuFootball are fairly long, the rules are the lengthiest of any Culica game yet, the previous record holder was CuPoker, a Culica game based on real Poker. But like CuPoker, CuFootball, once learned, is easy to play.

We think that football fans, especially football geeks, will enjoy a game of CuFootball. Like CuPoker, CuFootball is definitely a game that appeals to a different player than other Culica games. Games like cuPoker and CuFootball will help us reach out to new kinds of games players.

The CuFootball games rules are here: Culica Games Rules.
